The Late Great Duke of Edinburgh
The Queen's 'strength and stay' the Duke of Edinburgh. The nations uncle, the bedrock of the Royal Family and in my eyes, the Greatest of all time. From charity foundations, to the environment and the Armed Forces, he done it all.
However, he clearly missed the Politically Correct Brief. Which is why I liked him so much, he simply said what he was thinking, and that is a rare trait for a public figure!
‘You’re too fat to be an astronaut.’ (to 13-year-old Andrew Adams who told Philip he wanted to go into space. Salford, 2001)
‘If it has got four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it.’ (at a 1986 World Wildlife Fund meeting)
‘Do you still throw spears at each other?’ (In Australia in 2002 talking to a successful aborigine entrepreneur).
