Driver-less Cars, 2021?

Updated: Nov 23, 2017

The Chancellor has announced plans for driver-less cars on UK roads by 2021...

Madness or Plausible?

I'm with Jeremy Clarkson on this one:

"You drive one of your driverless cars over the Death Road in Bolivia and I'll buy one, Sit there with your hands folded and let it drive you up there, then squeeze past a lorry with half the tyre hanging over a 1,000ft drop while the car drives itself. Fine, I'll buy into it."

I can only nod in agreement with Mr Clarkson...

How often does your computer or phone freeze? what if your car were to freeze at 70mph on the M6...

Shuts down and updates? I am yet to be convinced...

The industry is projected to be worth £27 Billion by 2035 and could create 27000 jobs?

Ok, so they may be good for the economy and they may create jobs...

However, they may create chaos too?

When the inevitable happens and unfortunately, I'm sure it will - it must be optional, I like driving as do many millions of people however, my mother hates driving!

So if the technology is perfected, fine...but it must be optional! My mother can have one and I'll stick to a manual...

We must be given a choice of fully automated, a switch between the 2 (semi - automated) and 100% manual, this way everybody is a winner.

My greatest fear is they will phase out manually driven cars, which would be catastrophic and more than likely cause unrest.

Has there been any opinion polling done on this matter? Do we want this panto on the Dual Carriageway?

There must be an opt in - opt out approach or the plans will falter and crash.
